Soapbox time.
I believe that original films should have original music. Pop songs are great, and so are Clint Mansell soundtracks, but using pre-existing music in your soundtrack is akin to using stock footage in your visuals.
Even if you have no musical training, that’s no excuse. Most everyone has friends who are musicians, and they usually work for beer. And not even all that much beer. Like 2 beers. There are lots of amateur and semi-professional film composers looking for movies to score. Even if you just throw something together with the samples that come with GarageBand or Soundtrack Pro, it’ll still be more unique and better suited to your film.
